Sister Mary Anthony Conway, MM

Born: February 1, 1880
Entered: January 22, 1916
Died: May 28, 1960

Sister Mary Anthony Conway’s funeral will take place at Bethany on Wednesday, June 1. God came for Sister Anthony on Saturday evening May 28, 1960.

Sister Mary Anthony (Norah Conway) was born in County Sligo, Ireland in 1880. She came to the United States in 1905, and on January 21, 1916, she entered Maryknoll, just four years after the first Sisters had gathered to devote their lives to mission cause.

After Rome had approved the new Congregation and the years of novitiate formation were ended, Sr. M. Anthony was one of the pioneer group to pronounce vows in 1921. During the same year, she pioneered again by helping to open missions on the West Coast – in Los Angeles and Seattle. Sister went to the Venard in 1922 and returned to the Motherhouse in 1924.

Sister has been ill for the past few years; but kept her cheerful spirit to the last. Following the doctor’s advice, on May 21, Sister was transferred to the Bethany infirmary.

During the past two weeks her condition worsened. She seemed very much at peace and enjoyed reminiscing about the past. She passed away very peacefully at 8:50 in the evening on May 28. Word came to us at Regina Maris on the last night of our retreat, in time to assemble the retreatants to pray the Rosary for her. Vicitors to the Motherhouse, as well as our own Religious family, will long miss the familiar little figure, sitting in back of chapel with her rosary, a green one, in her hands. We rejoice in the thought that the many rosaries prayed throughout the years helped to make Sister’s homecoming into Heaven a very joyous one.
