Sister Zoe Marie Berry, MM

Born: July 9, 1922
Entered: September 7, 1943
Died: March 28, 1958

Again, in less than two weeks time since the last such notice went to you, we write to announce that this morning God called home our dear Sister Zoe Marie.

Sister was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, July 9, 1922. She entered Maryknoll in September 1943, was assigned to Hawaii in 1946 and from thence, a few months later, to the Philippines. Sister returned to the Motherhouse for her decennial leave in May of 1946. At the end of this period she was preparing to return to her mission (some of her baggage had even been sent on to the Pacific Coast), when it was discovered that she was very ill. Sister underwent her treatment with unfailing cheerfulness and gratitude for the smallest service.

Father Davis, M.M. who, during the past few weeks had been coming to the Motherhouse to offer Mass at a later hour for the convenience of Sister Zoe Marie and other Infirmary patients arrived and led prayers for the dying.

The funeral Requiem will be sung Monday, with Father Berry as celebrant.

It is comforting to think of Sister’s going home on this beautiful Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Office of the day holds much that is beautifully significant. By our prayers, especially those of the usual suffrages, may we help to hasten the time of Sister’s being “safe in Paradise” with Our Lady, if indeed such help is still needed.
