Hugh T. Lavery was born on April 12, 1895 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Before coming to Maryknoll he had completed four years at Holy Cross College. He was ordained on June 15, 1924 and took the Perpetual Oath in 1931.
He held many posts in the Society and poor health prevented him from fulfilling an assignment to Korea. He worked in many houses in the United States as a promotion man, including the Venard, Los Angeles, Seattle and New Orleans. Father Lavery spent a good number of years working with the Japanese in Maryknoll’s Japanese Mission on the West Coast. He was Business Manager at the Venard and worked at the Mission San Juan Bautista in 1928. He was elected as a delegate to the General Chapter in 1936.
On April 28, 1970 Father died after a long illness. Before being taken to a hospital some weeks previous to his death, he lived with his family in Fairfield, Conn.
The funeral Mass and burial took place at Maryknoll, N.Y. on May 4th. Fr. Francis Winslow preached the homily.
