Sister Maureen Mahoney died early Good Friday morning, April 20, 1973.

Sister Maureen (Margaret Teresa) Mahoney was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts on July 2, 1902 and entered Maryknoll in April of 1925. She completed her high school requirements at the Venard and received her Teacher’s Certificate after two years of study at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

She was assigned to Hawaii in 1931 and served the people in the Islands for twenty-five years. Her next seventeen years were spent in service of mission in the United States at Valley Park, the Bronx and the Motherhouse, serving as superior, teacher and secretary. Though she was a person of few words, you knew that she gave her full cooperation to whatever was needed in her usual quiet, ordinary, faithful way, fulfilling to the letter what she once said upon receiving an assignment: “Aside from my trust in God, especially in the direction of the Holy Spirit, I have only good will.” All of us who lived with Sister Maureen knew her as the “good and faithful servant”; true in her fidelity to all that God asks of a Maryknoll Sister; totally consecrated to Him, and generous beyond the call of duty in service to her Sisters. Perhaps only now, when Sister’s countless duties have to be portioned out to others, do we realize how her day was filled in meeting the needs of others.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Easter Tuesday, April 24th as the opening Mass of the Senior Unit Assembly.
