Father Patrick H. Cleary, MM

Patrick Henry Cleary was born in Ithaca, N.Y. on August 16, 1896. He attended Immaculate Conception Parochial School and was graduated from Ithaca High School in 1914. He then went to St. Andrew’s Preparatory Seminary in Rochester from 1915 to 1917, transferred to St. Bernard’s Seminary and completed the two year course in Philosophy before entering Maryknoll in 1919.
After ordination on June 9, 1923 he went to Korea where he worked most of his active life in various capacities, including Consultor to the Regional Superior and chaplain in the United Nations Forces.
He was assigned temporarily to Hawaii in 1951 and returned to the mainland in 1952 for medical attention. Since that time he was in the United States doing chaplaincy work. In 1968 he took up residence at St. Teresa’s.
Father Cleary died on September 6, 1970 at Phelps Memorial Hospital.
A concelebrated Mass was held on the 10th at Maryknoll. Father General was the principal celebrant and Fr. Thomas O’Melia preached the homily.
