Entered: February 1, 1920
Died: March 15, 1970
Sister Mary Monica died at 6:10 this morning, March 15.
Sister Mary Monica (Alice Moffatt) was born in England, September 14, 1889. She came to the United States, to Washington, D.C. in 1902 and became a naturalized citizen in 1913. She attended Business School and took a course in Civil Service before entrance to Maryknoll, February 1, 1920. She was professed on August 5, 1921 and received her coveted assignment to South China at that time. Her early mission life was spent between Kowloon and Yeungkong. In 1927 Sister was assigned to the new work at St. Paul’s Hospital in Manila and was in charge of the dietary department and sewing room until she returned to the United States for medical treatment in 1935.
Sister had serious health problems, but she helped out in offices and at Bethany until she became incapacitated about ten years ago. Through her illness, Sister’s dry wit and lovely sense of humor were a delight to the Sisters who took care of her.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be offered for Sister on Thursday, March 17.
