Bishop James E. Walsh shared this reflection titled “Love” in the September 1945 issue of the Society’s magazine Maryknoll, The Field Afar. In it, he addresses the nature of a missioner’s interactions with the people he serves. They are timely words we can all take to heart about the importance of supporting one another.

“The missioner loves his vocation for a thousand reasons, but a chief one is the fact that it gives him an opportunity to help people. Everybody in the world has some trouble, but few find anybody to alleviate trouble, sympathize with it, or even listen to it. The missioner spends his life in relieving the troubles of others…”
