Over the past few weeks, I have been working on collections from our Maryknoll seminaries, namely Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn IL, which operated from 1949 to 1971. Candidates for the priesthood attended Glen Ellyn to complete their undergraduate education before moving on to the Novitiate and the Major Seminary at Maryknoll. The young men studied topics appropriate for future priests, such as Latin and theology, but they also attended many of the same classes as laypeople of the day – history, English, calculus, chemistry, and so on. The students also participated in many of the same kinds of extracurricular activities as their secular counterparts. They enjoyed putting on theatrical performances, playing sports like basketball and baseball, reading popular books, and playing various instruments. This year, we celebrate back-to-school with a few former Glen-Ellyn-ers who share their experience of a Maryknoll education through their photos. Click on the photos to see captions and move from photo to photo. We hope you enjoy!
