Pet Appreciation Week
(June 2nd – June 8th)
The first week of June is Pet Appreciation Week! Pets play an important role in many people’s lives. As of 2024, an estimated 86.9 million households in the United States have pets (Megna). Our many animal companions deserve to be appreciated for all the love and joy they bring into our lives.
Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers, Maryknoll Sisters, and Maryknoll Lay Missioners are no exception in their love and respect for animals. The Archives’ photographs and records document Maryknollers and their animal companions since the early 1900’s. When not receiving gentle care and adoration, our missioners’ pets serve alongside them in varying roles as working animals.
Fr. Patrick Byrne’s dog, Teddy, poses in a traditional Korean Gat, Peng Yang, Korea, 1928. Teddy and Fr. Byrne were missioned together in Korea during the 1920’s.
Maryknoll pets have worked as Chief Mousers, Agriculturists, Security Experts, Missioners, and Transportation Specialists among other jobs. We invite you to learn more about their various careers and grand adventures below:
